Are You Thinking Of De-clawing Your Cat Because He Is Ruining Your Furniture ?

Category : CAT BREEDS, CAT FOOD, CAT HEALTH

Is your cat destroying your furniture? Is he tearing it to pieces and driving you to distraction scratching away at the legs of your favourite dining room table until your table looks like it’s been a part of the Texas chainsaw massacre? Are you now thinking about de-clawing your cat?

Cats love to scratch away, it’s quite natural for cats to do so and helps them shared some of the dead material on their claws. As well as that it helps them mark their territory by leaving small amounts of scent around the house. Because they don’t know that you have no intention of allowing rival cats to enter.

If you plan to try and stop your cat from clawing the furniture then you should know that you’re backing a loser. You can scold him, you can punish him, you can throw him outside or smack his paws till your hands hurt and chances are good that it won’t do anything at all. He will still scratch the legs of your favorite table and drive you to distraction.

Cat owners who reach the stage of realization that they are unable to stop the cat scratching the furniture sometimes consider de-clawing their cat. This is a surgical procedure where the claws, usually on the front legs only, are removed with part of the bones. It is expensive, it is extremely painful for the cat who needs to walk around on injured feet for a period of time whilst they are healing, and it also poses various risks to the cat.

Some of the most important things that cats do require claws. Your cat can’t play in trees if he can’t climb them. They use their claws when stretching, running and jumping and even digging in their litterbox.

And remember that claws are his only source of defence against a dog attack. They work very well unless he doesn’t have any.

Sadly many people are unaware or don’t consider that there are cheaper and less painful and less stressful solutions than de-clawing your cat. For under $20 you can buy a cat scratching post and if you train him to use it the problem is sorted.

cat scratching pole is a piece of dedicated cat furniture that is intended to provide him with a place to scratch where he can do all the damage he likes. Whilst it can sometimes take some effort to train him to use it there is no doubt that buying a scratching post and training him to use it is way less stressful and less expensive than serious surgery.

There are many countries where cat de-clawing is illegal. It is expensive and unnecessary and painful for the cat and the need for it is removed simply by buying cat scratching posts and training your cat properly.

How to Stop Dog Barking

Category : CAT BREEDS, CAT FOOD, CAT HEALTH

If you have ever had a neighbor complain about your dog’s incessant barking, or you have been told you need to quiet your dog or else must find a new place to live, you know just how serious it is to silence your hound!  There are a number of different ways you can go about quieting your dog’s yelps and whines, like bark off, each way offering different benefits and drawbacks.  We will start with the most drastic option first:

1)    Cutting your dog’s vocal cords:  The benefit to this is that it is permanent and a rather easy solution (apart from paying for the procedure).  Your dog is put under an anesthetic, and while they are asleep a laser is used to sever the dog’s vocal cords.  Though this is a permanent solution (though some dogs do “get their bark back” some years later) consider how you’re taking away an important form of communication for your dog.  This should only be considered in extreme circumstances (such as, either the vocal cords go, or the dog must be put down).

2)    Shock Collars:  Shock collars will put an immediate interrupt to your pet’s barking.  A shock collar is a collar you put around your dog’s neck that has a shocking device placed over their front of the neck where the vocal cords are.  When a vibration is sensed, a “shock” is given to the dog intermittently until he or she quiets down.  An argument can be made that the shock collars are inhuman (let’s face it; receiving an electric shock is not exactly pleasant) and may detrimentally affect your dog’s behavior.  Alternatively, some dogs just couldn’t care less that they’re getting shocked and they will just continue to bark and bark anyways.

3)    Bark Off: An ultrasonic non-barking device is usually a small device that can be placed and taken any where to put a stop to your pet’s barking.  When the device “hears” a bark, it will emit a sound at a higher frequency that we humans can’t hear but dog’s can.  The noise will distract and therefore stop the barking.  These devices are guaranteed as being pain free and in no way harmful to your pet, but do bear in mind that if your dog does have any sort of hearing difficulties it may not be effective.

4)    Training:  Asking a trainer for advice on how to work with your dog to stop his or her barking habit is not only the most effective method, but it can strengthen the bond between you and your pet!  You will need a fair amount of patience to really make the training work, but if you stick to the plan both you and your dog will live happily bark-free ever after.
